In addition to the standard and universally recognised Incoterms you may also come across various other terms and phrases which may affect your liability and responsibility. Our intention here is to post weekly definitions of expressions used in the freight business in an understandable manner. Over time this will become an invaluable archive and excellent source of information. This type of seafreight container is used in specialised trade, particularly for the carriage of plywood from Asia. It may also be used for certain perishable products and may even have an application in the carriage of general cargo where loading access from the side is important. Given their specific product usage they are very common on certain trade routes and very rare on others. Blank Endorsed
Todays term: Container Types - Open sided container
The container itself is built with a fixed roof, floor and ends (one end of which has the standard double-door). However, the sides are a removable combination of ‘gates’ and tarpaulins. The gates are to the full interior height of the container and four gates are needed to cover the width of one of the missing sides. The tarpaulins are normally made of PVC and nylon and the single sheet used on each side covers the gates or may be rolled up like a curtain.
